Bangladeshi-origin Eliza Rahman has been elected deputy mayor of Camden Council in south-west Sydney, New South Wales, becoming the first woman of Bangladeshi origin to hold such a position in an Australian local government body.
She was elected by fellow councillors at the council’s general meeting on Tuesday night, while Councillor Vince Ferreri was elected mayor, according to the Camden government website.
‘It’s exciting to be able to serve in the role,’ she said after her election.
‘I can’t wait to continue to serve this wonderful community in my new position. I look forward to all the things we can achieve together,’ she said.
With her election, Eliza becomes the second Bangladeshi-origin person to hold the position of deputy mayor in an Australian local government body.
Masud Khalil became the first when he was elected deputy mayor of Campbelltown City Council, which is adjacent to Camden, in September 2023.
